Next Step

Next Step is a program designed to help families begin navigating the journey of caring for their child with a developmental disability.

Parents often have many questions and concerns when they find out their child has a developmental disability. The Next Step Program is here to provide important support and direction enabling them to focus on the mores efficient and effective services for their newly diagnosed child.

The Next Step Program supports families in Onondaga County and the surrounding area by offering up to 3 home visits and/or telephone consultations to help parents:

• Understand their child’s development and challenges
• Identify potential services that their child may need
• Answer questions and serve as a resource that provides direction toward other
- professionals, resources or services

The Next Step Program provides an information packet to parents containing:

• Resources about developmental disabilities
• The effects on the child and family
• Educational and therapeutic services and how to obtain them
• Treatment approaches
• Local community services for Central New York
• Websites and books
• Planning and contact worksheets
• Glossary of terms
