First Look

First Look is a clinical program of the Margaret L. Williams Developmental Evaluation Center (DEC) that offers support to families and caregivers with young children (birth – 5 years) presenting with behavioral, developmental, emotional or language concerns.

Who does First Look Serve?

Parents and/or child care providers who have concerns about a child’s development
- or behavior
Parents and/or child care providers who want consultation about effective strategies for
- working with a particular child
Child care providers who desire training to identify children needing intervention
Children who need short term developmental or behavioral assistance


How can First Look help?

By providing observation and developmental screening in homes and community settings
By developing strategies with parents and providers for working with a child
By providing short term developmental consultation
By offering parenting and child-centered guidance by telephone
By providing follow-up to families and child care providers
By referring to other community services
By providing training to child care providers on:
Observation
Normal development
Methods of screening
Risk factors
Referral process
Inclusion


Who is the First Look staff?

The First Look staff members are education and clinical professionals who specialize in early childhood.


What is the cost of First Look?

There is an initial screening fee which can be billed to insurance, Early Intervention, or Medicaid; however, financial concerns and questions can be addressed on an individual basis with staff.
